Sample Flips: 2 Chainz – “Threat 2 Society” (Prod. by 9th Wonder)

2 Chainz is a rapper from College Park, Georgia who has been recording since the late ’90s.  In 1997, he rhymed under the name Tity Boi, and he formed Playaz Circle with his friend and local rapper Dolla Boy. They enjoyed a decent run in the 2000s, and their most well-known record was “Duffle Bag Boy” Ft. Lil Wayne.  In 2011, Tity Boi changed his name to 2 Chainz.  The name change worked, and he went on a hot streak.

In 2011, 2 Chainz released his mixtape T.R.U. REALigion, and it was a hit.  The following year, he released his debut album, Based on a T.R.U. Story, and it was another hit.  The album went platinum, and it was led by singles like “No Lie” and “I’m Different.”  In 2012, he also appeared on Kanye West’s “Mercy,” Juicy J’s “Bandz a Make Her Dance,” and A$AP Rocky’s “Fuckin’ Problems.”  In 2015, 2 Chainz released the joint album ColleGrove with Lil Wayne.  In 2017, 2 Chainz released Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, and it went platinum.  In 2019, he released Rap Or Go To The League.  “Threat 2 Society” is one of my favorite songs because it’s an example of his range.  We’re used to hearing 2 Chainz on trap beats, but he can also rock on a sample-based beat.
