Source Material: Johnny Hammond – “Can’t We Smile”

0

Johnny Hammond was a jazz organist from Louisville, Kentucky who’s career spanned three decades.  Although he started recording in the late ’50s, he found most of his success in the ’60s and the ’70s.  One thing that was dope about Hammond was his adaptability.  In each phase of his career, Hammond was able to fit his style to the time.  During the ’60s, Hammond recorded for the famous jazz label Prestige Records.  He played with singers Etta Jones, Byrdie Green, and Nancy Wilson.

In the ‘70s, his sound evolved, and he incorporated soul and funk elements. He recorded for Kudo Records, an imprint of CTI Records, and Milestone Records.  In 1975, he released Gears on Milestone Records.  It was one of the last albums he released, and it was also one of his most popular albums.  “Can’t We Smile” is one of the album standouts.
