The Funkees were a Nigerian band that recorded in the ’60s and the ’70s. Their sound was a mix of afrobeat, funk, rock, and soul. In the late ’60s, the band was formed by lead vocalist and guitarist Harry Mosco. Initially, the band played for the Nigerian Army after the Nigerian Civil War. Then, after a series of lineup changes, The Funkees started recording outside of the army. By the early ’70s, they started releasing a number of singles. One of those singles, “Akula Owu Onyeara” (1972), was one of their strongest.
