Van Mccoy was a singer, songwriter, and producer from Washington, D.C. He came up as a songwriter in the ’50s and the ’60s. He wrote hits for artists like Gladys Knight & The Pips (“Giving Up), Barbara Lewis (“Baby I’m Yours”), and David Ruffin (“Walk Away From Love”). Mccoy’s success as a solo artist started in the ’70s. His career took a big step in 1975. That year, he released his second album, Disco Baby. The lead single was “The Hustle.” And it was a smash it! The record went gold, it peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and at #3 in the U.K. The following year, “The Hustle” won a Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
