David Zé was an Angolan musician who sang in the ’60s and the ’70s. He was also a political activist, and he played a role in Angola obtaining their independence from Portgual. In 1975, after Angola became an independent country, Zé was named the Director of Music in the new regime: MPLA (Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola). That same year, Zé released two projects. He released his one and only album, Mutudi Ua Ufolo/Viuva Da Liberdade, and he also released an EP, O Guerrilheiro. I discovered him through the title song, “O Guerrilheiro.”
