Major Lance was a soul singer from Winterville, Mississippi who recorded in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. He was well known for his string of classics in the ’60s. Songs like, “The Monkey Time, “Hey Little Girl,” and “Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um” were the most notable. One thing that’s cool about Lance’s career is his friendship and frequent collaboration with Curtis Mayfield. In their teenage years, after Lance moved to Chicago, they both attended the same high school. As Curtis Mayfield’s career progressed in the early ’60s, he helped Lance build his career as well. Mayfield played a vital role in Lance signing to Okeh Records in the ’60s. The two made great music together! In fact, all three of Lance’s most notable songs were written by Curtis Mayfield. I admire this part of Lance’s career because it’s a great example of friendship and artistry coming together.
