Gerson King Combo was a soul and funk singer from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. His career started in the ’60s, and it lasted well into the ’80s. At the start of his career, Combo was a dancer and a choreographer. Then, he evolved to composing and singing his own songs. During the ’60s, he started his own band called Formula 7, and then he went solo in the ’70s. In the process, Combo’s music played a pivotal role in the expansion of “Black Rio.” “Black Rio” was a movement in Brazil that featured and empowered Black culture in Rio De Janeiro. In 1977, he released his debut album, Gerson King Combo. The album featured one of his most notable songs, “Mandamentos Black.”
