Barbara Jean English is a soul singer from Sumpter, South Carolina. In the late ’50s, she began her career as the lead singer for The Clickettes. The Clickettes were a New Jersey based doo-wop group that featured English, Sylvia Hammond, and Trudy and Charlotte McCartney. In the ’50s and the ’60s, The Clickettes enjoyed a brief run, and even changed their name to The Fashions, but they failed to breakout. In the ’60s, English went solo. She recorded a bunch of singles for various labels, and in 1972, she released her debut album, So Many Ways…, on Alithia Records. I discovered English through her second album, Barbara Jean English. One of my favorite songs from her self-titled album is “You’re Gonna Need Somebody To Love You.”
