Pharoahe Monch is a rapper from South Jamaica, Queens who emerged in the ’90s. He started his career as a member of Organized Kufsion, a hip hop duo that featured Prince Po. Organized Kufsion had a solid fan base on the underground circuit, but they failed to break out commercially. After the release of their third album, The Equinox (1997), the duo split up. Later that year, Pharoahe Monch signed to Rawkus Records. In 1999, Monch released his debut album, Internal Affairs. “Simon Says” was the only commercial hit from the album and it also became one of his most well-known songs.
