Judy Mowatt is a Jamaican reggae artist from Gordon Town, Jamaica. In 1967, she started her singing career when she joined The Gaylettes. Mowatt sang lead, Beryl Lawson and Merle Clemenson completed the trio, and they released a slew of singles well into the early ’70s. “Silent River Runs Deep” and “Take A Chance (On Me)” were some of their early standouts. In 1974, Mowatt joined the I-Threes, the backup vocal trio for Bob Marley that included Rita Marley (Bob Marley’s Wife), Marcia Griffiths, and Judy Mowatt. One year later, Mowatt released her debut album, Mellow Mood. In 1979, she released her second album, Black Woman. The title song, “Black Woman” is an empowering record for Black women across the globe.
