Sample Flips: T La Rock & Jazzy Jay – “It’s Yours” (Prod. By Rick Rubin)

T La Rock is a rapper from Bronx, New York who came up in in the ’80s.  In 1984, he released his debut single, “It’s Yours,” and it was the first song released on Def Jam. The way the song came together is dope. It all started when T La Rock met up with Rick Rubin in his dorm room. T La Rock had already heard a portion of Rubin’s beat, but meeting in person was one of the last pieces to complete the song. After the initial meeting, T La Rock returned with two crucial people, his brother Special K and his DJ Louie Lou. Special K was the one who introduced T La Rock to Rubin and DJ Louie Lou had scratches on the original beat. However, after an artistic disagreement, Special K removed Louie Lou from “It’s Yours,” and Rick Rubin brought in Jazzy Jay to replace him. The final version of “It’s Yours” was complete shortly after. “It’s Yours” was a hit in the streets, and by the end of T La Rock’s career, it was one of the biggest songs in hip hop.
