Source Material: El Chicano – “Sabor A Mi”
El Chicano was a latino band from Los Angeles, California who enjoyed a solid run in the ’70s. The original band was formed by Freddie Sanchez, and it included Bobby Espinosa, Mickey Lespron, Andre Baeza, and John De Luna. El Chicano’s main flavor was soul, but they also included elements of rock, funk, and jazz. In 1970, they released their debut album, Viva Tirado. It was a promising debut; it reached #19 on the Billboard R&B chart, and the title song, “Viva Tirado,” was a hit throughout Los Angeles. In 1971, they released their second album, Revolución. Unfortunately, this album failed to chart significantly, but it featured “Sabor A Mi.” At the time, “Sabor A Mi” was moderately successful, but over the ensuing years, the song became a cult classic within the latino community.
