Miki Matsubara was a Japanese singer and composer from Sakai, Osaka, Japan. Growing up, music was a big part of her life. Her mother was a jazz singer, and at three years old, Matsubara learned how to play the piano. In 1975, while she was in high school, she joined the Yoshinoya Band as a keyboardist. Two years later, Matsubara left Osaka for Tokyo and she pursued a solo career full time.
In 1979, she released her debut single, “Mayanoka No Door (Stay With Me),” and it was a smash hit. She followed that up with “Neat na gogo san-ji” in the ’80s, and her profile continued to rise in Japan. By the end of her career, she released twelve albums, and she carved out a niche within Japan’s city pop scene. “Stay With Me” is her most notable work to date.
