Melvin Bliss was a soul singer from Chicago, Illinois. His music career started in the Navy where he sang in a few naval bands throughout the ’50s. When he returned home, he continued performing in local clubs. By the ’70s, Bliss was still trying to find his way, but then he had a chance encounter with producer Herb Rooney. In 1973, Rooney and Bliss recorded his debut single, “Reward/Synthetic Substitution.” “Reward” was the A-Side single, and “Synthetic Substitution” was the B-Side. Neither song found much success at the time, but the B-Side has enjoyed an extensive life. In the end, “Synthetic Substitution” was the real gem because it became his most well-known song.
