Howard Tate was a singer and songwriter from Elberton, Georgia. As a teenager, Tate sang in a gospel group called The Gainors. They recorded a string of songs during the late ’50s, but they didn’t find much success. After his stint with The Gainors, Tate sang alongside organist Bill Doggett for a few years. In 1963, Tate joined ex-Gainors member Garnett Mimms in his new group Garnett Mimms & The Enchanters. Shortly after, Mimms introduced Tate to Jerry Ragovoy, a producer from Philadelphia who started recording Tate for Verve Records. From 1966-1968, Tate and Ragovoy recorded some of Tate’s biggest hits. “Stop” was one of the last hits they recorded together before Tate moved onto a different label.
