Michie Mee is considered a pioneer in Canadian hip hop. She is an artist of many cultures; she was originally born in Jamaica, raised in Toronto, Canada, and she spent a lot of her teenage years in New York. At fourteen, she started rhyming, and while in New York, she met KRS One and Scott La Rock from Boogie Down Productions. In 1985, at 15, she made her first appearance on stage after she was introduced at a Boogie Down Productions concert in Toronto.
Around this time, she met local producer L.A. Luv, and they formed the duo Michie Mee and L.A. Luv. In 1988, they released their first single, “Elements of Style.” It was a hit in the states, and it led to a record deal with First Priority Records. Michie Mee became the first Canadian rapper to sign a record deal in America. That same year, Michie Mee and L.A. Luv recorded “On This Mic,” which appeared on the compilation album, The First Priority Music Family: Basement Flavor (1988). They continued their ascension well into the early ’90s, and by the end, Michie Mee was one of the first successful Canadian rappers in hip hop.
