Monie Love is a rapper from Battersea, London, England who made an impact in the late ’80s and early ’90s. In 1988, at 18, she moved to New York City. Two years later, she released her debut album, Down To Earth. The album featured one of her most well-known songs “Monie In The Middle.” The following year, Love appeared on Queen Latifah’s “Ladies First,” and together, their anthem for women became a powerful domestic and international statement. Alongside Queen Latifah, Love joined Native Tongues, a hip hop collective that featured Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, and Chi-Ali. Love continued to ascend in the ’90s, but she released her second and final album, In A Word Or 2, in 1993. She ultimately transitioned to radio, but the impact of her lyricism and her style still remains.
