Mariya Takeuchi is a Japanese city pop singer from Taisha, Shimane, Japan. In 1978, she signed with RCA Records, and she released her debut album, Beginning. Around this time, Takeuchi took a break from her solo career in order to raise her daughter. In 1984, Takeuchi made her return. She released her sixth album, Variety, on Moon Records, a formerly independent Japanese label. The album went #1 in Japan, and it featured “Plastic Love.” At the time, “Plastic Love” was moderately successful, but Takeuchi’s song has become one of the most impactful songs in the renaissance of city pop in the 2010s.
