Rupa is a singer from Malda Town, West Bengal, India who recorded in the early ’80s. She struggled to find success early in her career, but a trip to Canada changed everything. In 1981, Rupa and her family went on vacation to Canada. After performing for her family, they arranged for her to perform at the University of Calgary. Her performance at the university was so impressive that it led to the recording of her one and only album, Disco Jazz. Released in 1982, Disco Jazz was supposed to be her big break, but it was largely overshadowed by other releases. “Aaj Shanibar” is one of the strongest songs on the album. Forty years later, after her music was discovered on YouTube, and her album was reissued, Rupa’s album has been properly recognized.
