France Gall is a French yé-yé singer from Paris, France. Yé-yé was a style of music that originated in Southern Europe during the early ’60s. The inspiration for the genre was British and American rock ‘n’ roll. In 1963, when France Gall was sixteen, she released her debut single, “Ne Sois Pas Si Bête” (“Don’t Be So Stupid”). The success of her single led to an introduction to Serge Gainsbourg, the legendary French musician who helped popularize yé-yé music in France and abroad. He wrote her second single, “Laisse Tomber Les Filles,” and it was another smash hit. Unfortunately, as the ’60s wore on, she struggled to match her earlier success.
