Source Material: Patti Austin – “The Family Tree”

Patti Austin is a singer and songwriter from New York.  She was born in Harlem, but she grew up in Bay Shore, New York on Long Island.   When she was four years old, she sang at the Apollo Theater during a performance by Dinah Washington, who was also Austin’s godmother.  As a teenager, she recorded commercial jingles, and she worked as a session singer.  In 1965, she released her debut single, “I Wanna Be Loved/A Most Unusual Boy.”  Four years later, she recorded her first hit, “The Family Tree;” it peaked at #46 on the Billboard R&B chart.   However, it wasn’t until the ’80s that Austin found continued success.
