Skee-Lo is a rapper from Chicago, Illinois who rose to prominence in the ’90s. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was a teenager, and that’s also around the time he started rhyming. In 1995, he released his debut album, I Wish. The album was led by three singles, “I Wish,” “Top of the Stairs,” and “Superman.” “I Wish” peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it became the most well-known song in his career. However, “Top of the Stairs,” was a minor success, but I actually like it better. After the initial success of his album, Skee-Lo ran into problems with his label Sunshine Records. Their dispute was over Skee-Lo’s publishing rights; he alleged that his label claimed full ownership of his rights, he took them to trial, and after years of legal battles, he won.
