Tyrone Davis was a soul singer from Greensville, Mississippi. Before he became Tyrone Davis, he performed under the name, “Tyrone The Wonder Boy.” After Davis moved to Chicago in 1959, he started singing in local nightclubs. He was eventually discovered by Harold Burrage, a pianist and a producer from Chicago. In 1965, performing under the name, “Tyrone The Wonder Boy,” Davis released his debut single, “Suffer,” on the Four Brothers record label.
In 1968, after meeting Carl Davis, a producer and a record executive from Chicago, Davis signed to Dakar Records. Upon signing, Carl Davis suggested that Davis change his name, so he began performing as Tyrone Davis. His first single on the label, “Can I Change My Mind/A Woman Needs To Be Loved” (1968), was a success. “Can I Change My Mind” led the way, and eventually became its own single; it peaked at #1 on the U.S. R&B Chart. The song is dope, but I like how a change of scenery led to a much more fulfilling career. During his time at Dakar records, Davis released about 25 singles, and most of them were successful.
