DJ Quik is a rapper and producer from Compton, California. Quik started rhyming in high school, and he made his name on the mixtape circuit. The Red Tape, released in 1987, was the mixtape that led to his record deal with Profile Records. After signing in the summer of 1990, Quik released his debut album, Quik Is The Name, in 1991. It peaked at #29 on the Billboard 200, and it was certified Gold four months after its release. The album was led by two singles, “Born and Raised In Compton,” and “Tonite.” “Born and Raised In Compton” is one of the best and the most successful songs on the album for good reason; the track is hard.
