Source Material: Angela Bofill – “Under The Moon and Over The Sky”

Angela Bofill is a singer from Brooklyn, New York who grew up in the Bronx.   Her father was Cuban and her mother was Puerto Rican; this multicultural background played a role in many of her records.  Bofill started singing when she was four, and she started writing music when she was twelve.  By the time she was in high school, Bofill led a band called the Puerto Rican Supremes.  She also sang in the New York All-City High School chorus, and in college, she studied classical music.

After college, she began singing with Ricardo Morrero & the Group, a latin band based in New York.  Bofill’s lead vocals on “My Friend,” a single off of their debut album, Taste (1976), led to new opportunities for her.  Dave Valentin, a jazz flutist and friend of Bofill, introduced her to Dave Gruisin and Larry Rosen (co-founders of GRP Records).  Shortly after, Gruisin and Rosen signed Bofill to their GRP label, and they produced her debut album, Angie (1978).  Her first album featured her hit single “This Time Will Be Sweeter,” but my favorite song is “Under The Moon and Over the Sky.”  I like the way Bofill incorporates soul and jazz in this song.
