MC Lyte is a rapper from Brooklyn, New York who started her career in the ’80s.  In 1982, at 12 years old, she wrote her first rhyme.  In 1984, at 14 years old, she recorded it; however, “I Cram to Understand You (Sam)” wasn’t released until 1986.  In 1988, she released her debut album, Lyte As A Rock.  Upon its debut, she became the first woman in Hip Hop to release a solo album.  The album wasn’t a major success at the time, but it was still hard.  Now, Lyte As A Rock is considered one of the most important albums in Hip Hop history.

The album featured songs like “Paper Thin,” “10% Dis,” and “Lyte As A Rock.”  “10% Dis” is one of the most infamous diss songs in history.  The track was directed at Antoinette, a rapper from the Bronx, who was connected to producer, Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor.  Around this time, Hurby and Audio Two had agreed to record a song based on their hit “Top Billin’,” but when Hurby didn’t follow through, they assumed the song was off.  But actually, Hurby gave the beat to Antoinette; the rest was history.  “10% Dis” is a cool diss track, but it’s also one of the hardest songs period.
