Willie Henderson is a singer, songwriter, and producer from Pensacola, Florida. As a child, he moved to Chicago with his family, and in his 20s, he started playing the baritone saxophone. At the beginning of his career, he worked with artists like Otis Rush, Syl Johnson, and Alvin Cash. In 1968, he became the studio bandleader for Brunswick Records, a Chicago-based label where Henderson produced and arranged music alongside Carl Davis. Together, they produced music for artists like the Chi-Lites, Jackie Wilson, and Tyrone Davis. In 1970, Henderson and the Soul Explosions (his backing band) released their debut album, Funky Chicken. “Soulful Football” is one of many funk tracks that I like on the album.
