Smoked Sugar was a soul group from Los Angeles, California who enjoyed a short-lived career in the late ’70s. Jimmy Conwell (aka James Conwell, aka Richard Temple) was a singer-songwriter based in LA and the lead singer for Smoked Sugar. In 1975, they released their one and only album, Smoked Sugar, on 20th Century Records. The album was led by their single, “Keeping Up My Front,” a record that ranges between funk and soul. I think Conwell and Smoked Sugar had a sound that deserved more recognition.
