Richard “Groove” Holmes was a jazz organist from Camden, New Jersey. He began his career playing the bass guitar, then he transitioned to the Hammond organ. Holmes taught himself how to play the organ, then he became one of the most well-respected organist throughout the ’60s and ’70s. He’s most well-known for his 1965 version of “Misty.” He also recorded with jazz legends like, Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, and Houston Person. He mentored fellow organist, Jimmy Mcgriff in the early ’70s which led to their 1973 album, Giants of the Organ Come Together. Two years later, Holmes released Onsaya Joy, an album that features a heavy dose of soul jazz and a title song that exemplifies his talent.
