Kool G Rap’s ability to tell intricate stories has always been impressive to me. Ever since I heard him on “The Symphony,” and especially on “Road to the Riches,” Kool G Rap has been a staple in my understanding of what it means to be an MC. “On the Run” is another one of those songs. On this track, Kool G Rap chronicles a man who shoots his way out of an Italian crime family. On the surface, it’s a dope rap concept, but Kool G Rap’s lyrics turns the song into a film. There’s three versions of the track – The album cut, the A-Side, “Al Capone Mix,” and the B-Side, “Untouchable Mix” (below). All three versions are sampling gold, but the “Untouchable Mix” is my favorite.
