Lamont Dozier is a singer, songwriter, and producer from Detroit, Michigan. After a slow start as a solo artist in the ’50s, Dozier began writing and producing music with songwriting brothers, Brian and Eddie Holland. In the early ’60s, the trio formed the infamous production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. The trio played a major role in shaping the overall sound of Motown. Their most celebrated songs were hits for The Supremes and The Four Tops, but they also worked with a number of other Motown artists. In 1973, Dozier left the production team and resumed his solo career.
Dozier enjoyed moderate commercial success as a solo artist. However, depending on the household, his solo albums from the ’70s have enjoyed an extended shelf life. And while Dozier’s solo career has a cult-following, his overall contribution to Soul music in the ’60s and ’70s is well-respected. His 1977 album, Peddlin’ Music On the Side, features “Break The Ice,” one of Dozier’s deeper cuts that I’ve grown to appreciate.
